Those streaks are Gloeocapsa magma, a hardy blue-green algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It's extremely common in our damp climate. It won't wash off with rain, but a roof-safe soft wash kills it and rinses it away, restoring the shingle's original color.
Can moss really damage an asphalt roof?
Yes. Moss roots into the seams between shingles, holds moisture against the mat, and lifts the shingle edges as it grows, which lets water underneath. Left long enough it shortens the roof's life significantly. Removing and treating it protects your investment.
How often should an asphalt roof be cleaned?
In the Northwest, most asphalt roofs benefit from cleaning every few years, and a periodic moss prevention treatment in between keeps growth from coming back. Shaded, tree-covered roofs collect the most moisture and need attention more often.
