Moss is the single most damaging thing that grows on a Northwest roof. It holds water against the shingles, lifts them at the edges, and roots into the seams. We remove it the careful way, treat what's left so it dies for good, and can keep it from ever coming back with preventive treatments.
Roof moss isn't a cosmetic problem, it's a structural one. Those green clumps in your shingle seams act like sponges, trapping moisture that rots the mat beneath the shingle and wedges the courses apart as the moss grows. On our shaded, tree-lined lots it can take over a north slope in a couple of wet seasons. Aggressive scraping and pressure washing do more harm than the moss, tearing the protective granules off asphalt shingles and cracking them. And because scraping leaves the spores and roots behind, the moss grows right back. We remove it gently and treat the roof so it actually stays gone.
What's the difference between moss removal and prevention?
Removal deals with established moss that's already on the roof, taken off by hand and killed at the root. Prevention is a roof-safe treatment applied to a clean roof to stop moss and algae from getting a foothold in the first place. Prevention is much cheaper, and doing it periodically means you rarely need a full removal again.
Will the moss come back?
Not nearly as fast. After removal we apply a treatment that kills the remaining spores, and in our damp, shaded climate we recommend a periodic preventive treatment to stay ahead of it. We can set that up on a maintenance schedule so you never have to think about it.
